“How do i know when to stop shuffling?”

Over the next few weeks, I'm answering your questions about the tarot.

“I never know when to stop shuffling as I haven’t yet found what that psychic ping feels like for me (any insight on this?). My question is: is there ever a tarot card reading that isn’t really aligned for someone if you don’t stop your shuffle at the “right” time?”

If you’re struggling with trusting your intuition or psychic ping, I suggest creating some guidelines for yourself instead and sticking to them. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Try a different tile of shuffle! Overhand, riffling, or mixing them up on the table. Sometimes changing the way the we shuffle can help a lot!

  2. Repeat your question to your cards as you shuffle. Decide on how many times you want to repeat the question and stick to it - try a number that’s magical to you. I like threes and sevens, but go with what feels right.

  3. Alternately, you can try choosing a number and that’s how many times you shuffle the deck and stick to it. Whether it’s three, or eleven, pick a number of times you will shuffle and use that number of shuffles each time you use your deck for a reading.

Using one of these methods once or twice isn't going to do the trick. Give yourself a few weeks or a few months trying one of these methods consistently. A lesson the Emperor card offers to us is that creating a discipline is exactly what we need in order to build a practice that feels good to us. That creating a solid foundation is what gives us the space to find and trust our intuitive knowings.

I personally believe that we rarely pull the “wrong” cards; sometimes we just need a little more time for the messages to resonate. If the information coming through the cards isn't hitting, give it a rest. Take a break and walk away. Maybe you can leave the spread out, or take a pic, or jot down a few notes so you can revisit at another time.

It's not unusual for the resonance to strike as your moving about through your life, often when you've nearly forgotten about the reading that had you stuck.

With all that said, if you pull a spread and your intuition is telling you “this isn't the one,” take it down, and shuffle again. If you find that you feel like you have to keep taking it down, keep reshuffling, then it's likely you are in need of some good grounding and cleansing. Sometimes we need to get our minds and our spirits centered once again before any of it makes sense.

Finally, if you’re new to tarot, be patient with yourself!! It takes time to become proficient in a new skill. It takes time to understand the way your psychic “knowing” shows up in your body. It takes time to build trust in yourself and your deck.

I always remind my kids (and myself) that we often have to be bad at something before we can be good at it. And that just because we aren't as proficient as we desire to be when we first try something new doesn't mean we should give up. And that having fun doing something doesn't need to be tied to how well we think we do it.

Keep practicing! I believe in you. :)
