performing elevation rites as a professional mystic
While I have historically (and presently lol) of the belief that one should perform their own Elevation Rites for their ancestors and/or departed loved ones, I also know enough to know that I don't know everything, and I'm not always right about everything. 😌
I can see how these ((lengthy)) rites are not always accessible to everyone who needs to perform them.
Luckily, there are reputable practitioners who do perform elevation rites for their clients. If you are one of these practitioners, or if you are a professional mystic who is interested in integrating these rites into their suite of services, I've got a few tips for you.
Consider the cost. The supplies for elevation rites are pretty simple: 8 bricks or books that you can reuse, a clear glass that can also be reused, a white candle, and a bit of alum. But what about the cost of your labor? Traditionally in Espiritismo, elevation rites are performed over the course of 9 days. On each of these days, while you sit at the elevation shrine, you are singing, praying, conversing, and energetically moving the spirit up and onward. This can take minutes, or it can take hours. Your time adds up over those nine days, and it is important, IMHO, that you are charging accordingly.
Consider the energetic and spiritual expense. When performing elevation rites, the practitioner often moves through the emotions, thoughts, and experiences of the spirit they are elevating. This can be particularly taxing if you are elevating a difficult spirit, however, with any spirit, this part of the process can be, well, a lot. It's important that as a practitioner, you are taking the extra steps to care for your emotional, spiritual, and physical health while performing elevation rites. Tending to your spiritual hygiene, preparing & taking spiritual baths, maintaining good energetic boundaries between yourself and the spirit you are elevating. While this isn't time spent performing the ritual itself, it is the important work that makes you able to perform these rites without depleting yourself entirely.
If it isn't already clear from my two previous points, this stuff takes time!! That's not an inherently bad thing!! It's likely one of the biggest reasons why clients may seek a professional's support doing this work. It is important for you, the practitioner, to consider (a) how long this work actually takes, including the prep work and aftercare, (b) whether you've actually got the time & capacity for it amidst your other responsibilities, and (c ), how many of these cases you can realistically take on each month given the aforementioned. I don't recommend over-packing your schedule with this type of spiritual labor!
Take good notes!! If possible, take notes during the ritual each night. Jot down any important information, discoveries, channeled messages, that come through. You don't need to send a nightly recap to your client, but I do recommend sending one once the 9 day working is complete. So often, clients who perform elevation rites report back to me saying that they made so many interesting discoveries about themselves, their departed loved one, their family lore, etc. This is part of the fun!! Since they won't be there to experience it, it's important that you do the work to report back! This not only provides the client with important information and instructions for any protocol moving forward, it also helps validate the work you are doing that largely goes unseen.
Before you do aaannnyyyyy of the stuff I mentioned above, consider performing a divination consultation. After doing an intake with your potential client, ask your Good Spirits - especially the ones who preside over your professional spiritual work - if (a) elevation rites are the appropriate remediation and (b) whether or not you are the appropriate practitioner for that work. A is important because if you perform elevation rites for a spirit who will refuse them, it may not be as successful as a different type of working. B is important because not every practitioner is the right fit for every case, and that's okay!! There maybe reasons that you are unaware of that make you the wrong practitioner for the job - in either case, it makes performing the rites a waste of your time, and the client's time. By doing this one step up front, you can either confirm that the working will be successful, or confirm that this isn't a good fit for you and free up your schedule for work that is.
